About Siraj

Siraj means lamp. To see the path back to the source.

Siraj is a place for religious knowledge, comparison, research, learning and topics of the day, in several languages. We do not say we make no mistakes. We show where each sentence comes from and who is responsible for it.

Boundaries

What Siraj is and what it is not.

Siraj is

  • Articles with a version number. In them a claim is kept apart from its source, and you can see where in the source each point appears.
  • A place to see the opposing view, with the reliable source of that very view.
  • Clear everyday tools: prayer times, the qibla and the Solar Hijri calendar. Everything is calculated on your own device.
  • A way to correct: any reader can send a message about one specific version.

Siraj is not

  • A place that gives fatwas, or takes the place of asking a marja.
  • Someone who has the last word on whether a hadith or a historical event is reliable.
  • A site that publishes by itself. At Siraj, AI publishes no text and changes none without notice.
  • A maker of sacred text, duas, narrations or rulings. These come only exactly as in an approved source.
  • A social network. Being seen a lot or having many followers makes nothing reliable.

The view of Siraj

Conclusions by name, other views fairly.

A conclusion, by name

Siraj may draw a clear conclusion from the Twelver Shia view. Wherever it does, it says whose view this is. A conclusion never comes under the name of “a neutral view”.

Another view, with its own source

We present schools, religions and other views fairly, with their own primary or reliable sources, not in the words of the other side. We do not hide disagreement.

We have not decided yet whether this conclusion comes in every article or only in some of them.

Status of the sections

What works today, and what does not.

Here you see the very thing that keeps the pages open or closed. So no page can say it is open while it does not have permission yet.

  • We show only fixed, published versions. Their sources have been reviewed, and a person decided to publish them.

  • Search

    Open

We search only in versions that have been published.

  • These are astronomical calculations, and you can see the method. They do not take the place of a ruling or of what a marja announces.

  • The direction of the qibla is calculated along the shortest path over the globe. Your location is read only with your own permission.

  • The Solar Hijri and Gregorian dates are calculated. Siraj also calculates the lunar date and writes “computed” next to it. This date may differ by a day or two from the calendar announced after the moon is sighted.

  • Readers can send a message about one specific version, without giving any personal information.

  • Quran

    Open

The text of the Quran comes exactly as in the approved collection, and its source and licence are written beside it. The owner of Siraj approved this section alone. No second person has reviewed it.

  • Hadith

    Open

The text of every hadith comes exactly as in its source, and the source and its licence are named beside it. Siraj has not assessed these narrations. If a collection carries assessments, each comes with the name of its assessor, and we do not merge them. The owner of Siraj approved this section alone. No second person has reviewed it.

  • Rulings

    Not open yet

Siraj shows the text of no ruling and copies no risalah or answers. To read rulings and ask a question, see the official website of each marja’s office.

Waiting for these decisions: Which sections, besides the articles and correction messages, are open in the first version; Who oversees the work, and what qualifications each expert must have; Copyright permission for the copies of sources and for the collections of sacred and religious texts.

  • This section is not open yet. No historical collection has been approved for display yet. When one is ready, we will say so here.

Waiting for these decisions: Which sections, besides the articles and correction messages, are open in the first version; Copyright permission for the copies of sources and for the collections of sacred and religious texts.

  • Each topic comes beside the published version of an article, with its validity date and how fresh its sources are.

  • Siraj opens a page of the Quran at random and shows the first verse of that page. It gives no result, does not explain the verse and does not ask your intention. If the office of آیت‌الله مکارم شیرازی has written a sentence for a verse, that sentence appears under the verse. Their office wrote it, not Siraj. The owner of Siraj approved this section alone. No second person has reviewed it.

  • The Arabic text of every dua comes exactly as in its source, and its source and licence are written under the text. Some collections have a Persian translation too. That translation too comes from the source, not from Siraj. The owner of Siraj approved this section alone. No second person has reviewed it.

Contact for corrections

To get in touch, send a message from the page you are reading.

Siraj has no email address or social media page for now. If you have found a mistake, have a new source or want to object, press the “Found a mistake? Tell us” button on the page of that article. That way your message is linked to that very version.
