فقال له العلاء: يا أَميرالمؤمنين، أشکو إِليک أَخي عاصمَ بنَ زياد. قال: و ما لَهُ؟ قال: لبِس الْعَبآءَةَ و تَخَلَّى عن الدنيا. قال: عَليَّ به. فلما جآء قال :
يَا عُدَيَّ نَفْسِهِ! لَقَدِ آسْتَهَامَ بِکَ آلْخَبِيثُ! أَمَا رَحِمْتَ أَهْلَکَ وَ وَلَدَکَ! أَتَرَى آللّهَ أَحَلَّ لَکَ الطَّيِّبَاتِ، وَ هُوَ يَکْرَهُ أَنْ تَأْخُذَهَا! أَنْتَ أَهْوَنُ عَلَى آللّهِ مِنْ ذلِکَ!
قال: يا أَميرالمؤمنين، هذا أَنْتَ في خُشُونَةِ مَلْبَسِکَ وجُشُوبَةِ مأکَلِکَ!
قال: وَيْحَکَ، إِنِّي لَسْتُ کَأَنْتَ، إِنَّ آللّهَ تَعَالَى فَرَضَ عَلَى أَئِمَّةِ آلْعَدْلِ أَنْ يُقَدِّرُوا أَنْفُسَهُمْ بِضَعَفَةِ آلنَّاسِ، کَيْلا يَتَبَيَّغَ بِالْفَقِيرِ فَقْرُهُ!
