Surah 70 المعارج
44 Verses
Meccan
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
سَأَلَ سَآئِلٌۢ بِعَذَابٍ وَاقِعٍ Verse 1
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall
Verse 1, Where in the source
لِّلْكَـٰفِرِينَ لَيْسَ لَهُۥ دَافِعٌ Verse 2
Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel,
Verse 2, Where in the source
مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ ذِى ٱلْمَعَارِجِ Verse 3
From Allah, Lord of the Ascending Stairways
Verse 3, Where in the source
تَعْرُجُ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ وَٱلرُّوحُ إِلَيْهِ فِى يَوْمٍ كَانَ مِقْدَارُهُۥ خَمْسِينَ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ Verse 4
(Whereby) the angels and the Spirit ascend unto Him in a Day whereof the span is fifty thousand years.
Verse 4, Where in the source
فَٱصْبِرْ صَبْرًا جَمِيلًا Verse 5
But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see.
Verse 5, Where in the source
إِنَّهُمْ يَرَوْنَهُۥ بَعِيدًا Verse 6
Lo! they behold it afar off
Verse 6, Where in the source
وَنَرَىٰهُ قَرِيبًا Verse 7
While we behold it nigh:
Verse 7, Where in the source
يَوْمَ تَكُونُ ٱلسَّمَآءُ كَٱلْمُهْلِ Verse 8
The day when the sky will become as molten copper,
Verse 8, Where in the source
وَتَكُونُ ٱلْجِبَالُ كَٱلْعِهْنِ Verse 9
And the hills become as flakes of wool,
Verse 9, Where in the source
وَلَا يَسْـَٔلُ حَمِيمٌ حَمِيمًا Verse 10
And no familiar friend will ask a question of his friend
Verse 10, Where in the source
يُبَصَّرُونَهُمْ ۚ يَوَدُّ ٱلْمُجْرِمُ لَوْ يَفْتَدِى مِنْ عَذَابِ يَوْمِئِذٍۭ بِبَنِيهِ Verse 11
Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children
Verse 11, Where in the source
وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَأَخِيهِ Verse 12
And his spouse and his brother
Verse 12, Where in the source
وَفَصِيلَتِهِ ٱلَّتِى تُـْٔوِيهِ Verse 13
And his kin that harboured him
Verse 13, Where in the source
وَمَن فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًا ثُمَّ يُنجِيهِ Verse 14
And all that are in the earth, if then it might deliver him.
Verse 14, Where in the source
كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّهَا لَظَىٰ Verse 15
But nay! for lo! it is the fire of hell
Verse 15, Where in the source
نَزَّاعَةً لِّلشَّوَىٰ Verse 16
Eager to roast;
Verse 16, Where in the source
تَدْعُوا۟ مَنْ أَدْبَرَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ Verse 17
It calleth him who turned and fled (from truth),
Verse 17, Where in the source
وَجَمَعَ فَأَوْعَىٰٓ Verse 18
And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it.
Verse 18, Where in the source
إِنَّ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ خُلِقَ هَلُوعًا Verse 19
Lo! man was created anxious,
Verse 19, Where in the source
إِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلشَّرُّ جَزُوعًا Verse 20
Fretful when evil befalleth him
Verse 20, Where in the source
وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلْخَيْرُ مَنُوعًا Verse 21
And, when good befalleth him, grudging;
Verse 21, Where in the source
إِلَّا ٱلْمُصَلِّينَ Verse 22
Save worshippers.
Verse 22, Where in the source
ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ دَآئِمُونَ Verse 23
Who are constant at their worship
Verse 23, Where in the source
وَٱلَّذِينَ فِىٓ أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ حَقٌّ مَّعْلُومٌ Verse 24
And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged
Verse 24, Where in the source
لِّلسَّآئِلِ وَٱلْمَحْرُومِ Verse 25
For the beggar and the destitute;
Verse 25, Where in the source
وَٱلَّذِينَ يُصَدِّقُونَ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ Verse 26
And those who believe in the Day of Judgment,
Verse 26, Where in the source
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم مِّنْ عَذَابِ رَبِّهِم مُّشْفِقُونَ Verse 27
And those who are fearful of their Lord's doom -
Verse 27, Where in the source
إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّهِمْ غَيْرُ مَأْمُونٍ Verse 28
Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure-
Verse 28, Where in the source
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ لِفُرُوجِهِمْ حَـٰفِظُونَ Verse 29
And those who preserve their chastity
Verse 29, Where in the source
إِلَّا عَلَىٰٓ أَزْوَٰجِهِمْ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَـٰنُهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ غَيْرُ مَلُومِينَ Verse 30
Save with their wives and those whom their right hands possess, for thus they are not blameworthy;
Verse 30, Where in the source
فَمَنِ ٱبْتَغَىٰ وَرَآءَ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْعَادُونَ Verse 31
But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors;
Verse 31, Where in the source
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ لِأَمَـٰنَـٰتِهِمْ وَعَهْدِهِمْ رَٰعُونَ Verse 32
And those who keep their pledges and their covenant,
Verse 32, Where in the source
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم بِشَهَـٰدَٰتِهِمْ قَآئِمُونَ Verse 33
And those who stand by their testimony
Verse 33, Where in the source
وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ يُحَافِظُونَ Verse 34
And those who are attentive at their worship.
Verse 34, Where in the source
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ فِى جَنَّـٰتٍ مُّكْرَمُونَ Verse 35
These will dwell in Gardens, honoured.
Verse 35, Where in the source
فَمَالِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ قِبَلَكَ مُهْطِعِينَ Verse 36
What aileth those who disbelieve, that they keep staring toward thee (O Muhammad), open-eyed,
Verse 36, Where in the source
عَنِ ٱلْيَمِينِ وَعَنِ ٱلشِّمَالِ عِزِينَ Verse 37
On the right and on the left, in groups?
Verse 37, Where in the source
أَيَطْمَعُ كُلُّ ٱمْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُدْخَلَ جَنَّةَ نَعِيمٍ Verse 38
Doth every man among them hope to enter the Garden of Delight?
Verse 38, Where in the source
كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَـٰهُم مِّمَّا يَعْلَمُونَ Verse 39
Nay, verily. Lo! We created them from what they know.
Verse 39, Where in the source
فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِرَبِّ ٱلْمَشَـٰرِقِ وَٱلْمَغَـٰرِبِ إِنَّا لَقَـٰدِرُونَ Verse 40
But nay! I swear by the Lord of the rising-places and the setting-places (of the planets) that We verily are Able
Verse 40, Where in the source
عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ خَيْرًا مِّنْهُمْ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ Verse 41
To replace them by (others) better than them. And we are not to be outrun.
Verse 41, Where in the source
فَذَرْهُمْ يَخُوضُوا۟ وَيَلْعَبُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ يُلَـٰقُوا۟ يَوْمَهُمُ ٱلَّذِى يُوعَدُونَ Verse 42
So let them chat and play until they meet their Day which they are promised,
Verse 42, Where in the source
يَوْمَ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ ٱلْأَجْدَاثِ سِرَاعًا كَأَنَّهُمْ إِلَىٰ نُصُبٍ يُوفِضُونَ Verse 43
The day when they come forth from the graves in haste, as racing to a goal,
Verse 43, Where in the source
خَـٰشِعَةً أَبْصَـٰرُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْيَوْمُ ٱلَّذِى كَانُوا۟ يُوعَدُونَ Verse 44
With eyes aghast, abasement stupefying them: Such is the Day which they are promised.
